Calendar girl by Patty Chang is a short piece which shows a Calendar attached to a wooden door and getting flapped in the wind by an air purifier that props the door open.
The calendar contains images of women on it and as its being moved by the current created by the air purifier it creates an illusion. The calendar consists of two halves, the first half has an image of the woman sitting upright with legs balled beneath her and the second image which is underneath showing only the bottom half of a photograph which is two legs standing up. Because of the current of air, the calendar flips between the two images creating an illusion of a woman moving or dancing.
Furthermore, the calendar is creating taping sound as it flaps against the wooden door, which creates of the rhythm of tapping sounds which sync to the images moving which further plays into the illusion of the woman dancing. The director purposely chose to shoot this piece from an upwards angle as it shows the illusion of more strongly than shooting in from another angle.
I think that this piece works a little but not fully as the illusion isn’t entirely seamless and does just look like the calendar flapping in the wind.
